Annie, the musical, opened on Broadway in 1977. It was a huge success and ran for nearly six years. It is based on the 1924 comic strip, Little Orphan Annie by Harold Gray. It, in turn, was inspired by the poem, "Little Orphant Annie” —
"Orphant" being misprint and was later changed to "Orphan." The music was by Charles Strouse, lyrics by Martin Charnin, and a book by Thomas Meehan.
